Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.

A Blizzard Warning means that your area is seeing or expecting strong winds and heavy or blowing snow. This can cause low visibility and very dangerous conditions. 

  • Do not travel unless an emergency requires it. If you must travel, make sure you have an emergency kit in your car and a full tank of gas and/or a fully charged battery. 
  • If you get stuck in your vehicle, stay there and contact the authorities for help. Run the motor for 10 minutes per hour for heat, but open the windows just a little for fresh air. 
  • At home, stay indoors until the storm has passed. 
  • Make sure that pets and other animals have plenty of food and water, and access to a warm shelter.
  • If using heat from a fireplace or wood stove, make sure to ventilate properly. Never use a gas range or oven to heat your home. If using a generator, it should be placed outdoors, at a distance from the home.

Travel may be impacted. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility to 1/2 mile or less at times. Heavy snow drifts may develop.

Northeast winds shift more northerly Sunday morning. Little to no additional falling snow is expected.

As a front moves north this weekend, areas of snow will move into the Seward Peninsula and Western Interior Saturday night into Sunday. Periods of snow will continue through Sunday night before lessening in coverage on Monday. Snowfall amounts will be heaviest east of Nome, especially in the higher terrain, where around 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected. Gusty northeast winds, particularly through the Bering Strait, could lead to areas of blowing snow which could significantly reduce visibility.

Blizzard/Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for the West Coast and Interior. There is high confidence in widespread accumulating snowfall by Monday afternoon of next week. Wind gusts are expected to peak at around 50 - 60 mph along the West Coast of St. Lawrence Island on Sunday, shifting to the West Coast of Alaska, decreasing to a maximum of 30 - 35 mph by Monday afternoon. During the afternoon and evening hours, a mix of rain/snow showers may occur across lower elevations farther south.
