Dangerous rip currents.

Where

Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.

When

Through Monday morning.

Impacts

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

What to Do

Swim near a lifeguard and away from rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Tips to Stay Safe

Rip currents may create dangerous swimming conditions in the area.  

  • If you enter the water, always have a flotation device with you and swim near a lifeguard. 
  • Keep small children in sight and within arm’s reach at all times. 
  • If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline.

Excessive Rainfall Outlooks

Scattered to widespread showers/storms expected over the weekend. This rain may fall in areas that already received multiple inches of rain over the past few days. Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall (level 2 of 4) for areas generally along the I-10 corridor today. Marginal Risk of Excessive Rainfall (level 1 of 4) for the remaining portions of the area today and for the Piney Woods on Sunday. Localized minor/street flooding possible during this timeframe as rainfall rates peaking in the 3-4” per hour range could lead to a quick 1-3+” of rain falling in a short period of time.
