The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for... Southwestern Armstrong County in the panhandle of Texas... Southeastern Randall County in the panhandle of Texas...

* Until 1245 PM CDT.

* At 939 AM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Up to 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

SOURCE...Radar.

IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... mainly rural areas of Southwestern Armstrong and Southeastern Randall Counties

What to Do

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.
Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely.

Tips to Stay Safe

A Flash Flood Warning means that dangerous flooding is expected or already happening. Flash flooding can develop in hours or minutes, so take protective action now.  

  • If you are in a low-lying or flood prone area, move to higher ground immediately.  
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water, and away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams. 
  • Never walk, swim, or drive through flood waters or flooded roads. 
  • If you are trapped in a building, move to the highest floor and call 911. Go to the roof only if necessary. 
  • If your vehicle is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay inside. If water is rising inside the vehicle, move to the roof and signal for help.

Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways. Some low-water crossings may become impassable.

- At 936 AM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Up to 1 inch of rain has fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are expected over the area.
